CONSULTATION
It is better to have a little information about the procedure you are looking into. So do a little research and take notes. Write down any questions you would like to ask your surgeon and ask them during the consultation.
If you are interested in breast or other body procedures such as rhinoplasty, make sure to wear comfortable and practical clothes since you will be asked to undress and wear a patient gown to be examined.
Bring your medical history records with you that will also show your family’s medical history. Ask if it is possible to fill out your medical history form beforehand, which will make the procedure easier and faster.
Give all the details about your medication history, including supplements you are taking to boost your health and energy. This will help make a more accurate and proper planning and ensure your safety before, during and after your surgery.
Be careful when filling out the forms. The more detailed it is, the better consultation you are going to have.
If you would like to have a conversation with other patients who have had the procedure before, contact with us so we can share other patient’s contact details with you under their consent.
PRE-OP
Smoking slows down the healing process by reducing the oxygen in your cells and can cause serious complications. It is best to quit smoking and avoid using other tobacco products at least a week prior to your surgery.
Stop drinking since it makes the blood thinner, which will be more likely to cause bleeding.
Consult your surgeon about the medications and supplements you take and anything you ingest to support your health, including herbs, teas, vitamins, and especially blood thinners so that they can advise you an alternative option or adjust the dose.
Avoid taking medications containing aspirin and ibuprofen since they may affect the normal blood clotting, which will make it harder to stop bleeding.
Do not eat or drink anything, including water, 8 hours prior to your surgery to have a better surgery and post-op.
If you are having a nose job or a breast surgery, it is better to wear loose, front fastening or scoop neck shirts instead of the ones that need to be pulled over your head to be taken off.
Take a shower with a soap that contains minimum level of chemicals a night before your surgery. This will reduce the risk of infections by cleaning the skin and an antibacterial soap will help operation tools stick to your skin better.
It is advised to shave your beards and mustache as it will make it easier for surgeons to operate.
DAY OF PROCEDURE
Bring loose and comfortable clothes and slippers with you.
Take off your fake nails and remove your nail polish as they can be harmful for the oxygen monitors.
Do not wear any piece of jewelry, remove all your piercings.
If you have contact lenses, take them out and wear your glasses instead.
Products such as make up, creams, lotions, moisturizers, hair sprays, deodorants and perfumes are very likely to produce bacteria on your skin, which will increase the risk of infection. So, do not apply any of them on the day of your procedure.
POST-OP
To manage the pain and avoid infection, your doctor will prescribe you some medicine. Take them exactly how your doctor indicates.
Get lots of rest. Give your body some time to rest. Do not start exercising right after your surgery. It may cause infection or injury and it will also slow down your healing process.
You can use antibacterial wipes to clean yourself as you will not be allowed to take a shower after the surgery.
Remain your non-smoking status even after the surgery. Keep this in mind that even second-hand smoking can affect the pace of your healing process.
You can start eating little by little in the first 24 hours. Make sure you have some food in your stomach even if it is a few bites as taking medication on an empty stomach can give you nausea and dizziness.
Putting an ice pack on your surgery site can be soothing. Be careful when applying the ice, follow the instructions your doctor gives.
If you have had a nose job, do not blow your nose. Consult your doctor for a medication that cleans the inner part of your nose instead.
HELPFUL TIPS
You will need time to recover so it is better to take at least 1 or 2 weeks off work.
